There will be four awards to recognize excellence and innovation in mentoring at UCI School of Medicine — specifically in the domain of faculty mentoring other faculty (not students). Each awardee will receive $1,000 and a plaque. They will also be interviewed, along with their mentee, by an associate dean about their experience, insights and advice on faculty mentoring. These video interviews will be posted on the School of Medicine Academic Affairs website. Winners’ names will be added to enduring plaques displayed in Irvine Hall. Read for more details.

| Request for Applications: School of Medicine New Investigator Faculty Research Grant | The School of Medicine Research Committee is pleased to announce the School of Medicine New Investigator Faculty Research Grant competition. It is the policy of the Committee to support seed research projects from new investigators that have a high probability of obtaining extramural funding as a result of this award. The maximum award for a single grant will be $30,000 (direct only), and we anticipate funding four proposals.
We strongly encourage proposals from senate faculty members who have not obtained their first independent NIH grant and may have research that is interdisciplinary, and/or that may cross UCI departments and schools or across UC campuses. To qualify, the applicant must have the NIH “Early Stage Investigator” status and not yet competed successfully as a PI to receive substantial independent NIH funding. Timothy McMullen (Devon Lawson Lab, Physiology & Biophysics) has been awarded a predoctoral training fellowship from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) Scholars Comprehensive Research Training Program. His research in the Lawson Lab examines the anti-metastatic function of Natural Killer (NK) cells in the context of brain metastasis.

| Faculty Seed Grants in Cancer Research Funding Opportunity | The Cancer Research Coordinating Committee (CRCC) is pleased to issue a Request for Proposals (PDF) for the 2024–25 Faculty Seed Grants. The CRCC is a systemwide, faculty-directed cancer research program that provides one-year seed grants for topics in any discipline that address any aspect of cancer, including its origins, prevention and cure. CRCC funds support meritorious research spanning all areas from basic research to applied clinical and community-based research in any field relevant to cancer. Eligible PIs must be members of the Academic Senate at one of the 10 UC campuses.

| Notice of Special Interest (NOSI): Administrative Supplement for Research and Capacity Building Efforts Related to Bioethical Issues (Admin Supp Clinical Trial Optional) (NOT-OD-24-031) | The NIH Office of Science Policy (OSP) within the Office of the Director (OD) announces the availability of administrative supplements to support 1) research on bioethical issues to develop or support the development of an evidence base that may inform future policy directions, and/or 2) certain efforts to develop or augment bioethics research capacity. Applicants may propose to supplement parent awards focused on bioethics or biomedical and/or health-related behavioral research. The proposed bioethics question, issue, or topic must be clearly articulated. All applications must be within the scope of the parent award.
OD is particularly interested in applications that identify, analyze, and/or address bioethical issues related to digital health and/or real-world data; patient (and those who can convey the lived experiences of the patient) and community engagement; return of research results for individuals, families, communities, and/or society; and data sharing. | Request for Proposals: Early phase Drug Development support program | The UCI Center for Neurotherapeutics (UCI CNT) is pleased to announce a call for applications focused on the discovery and development of small molecules intended to therapeutically modulate the function of targets or pathways implicated in neurological diseases (i.e. any disorder affecting the brain, spinal cord, neuromuscular system, or retina). | Discovery of in vivo Chemical Probes for the Nervous System (R01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed) (PAR-24-088) | The purpose of this Notice of Funding Opportunities (NOFOs) is to support investigators who have interest and capability to join efforts for the discovery of in vivo chemical probes for novel brain targets. | Limited Opportunity: 2024 Packard Fellowships for Science and Engineering | The Packard Fellows program is for highly creative young faculty researchers in the natural, physical sciences and engineering during their first three years as faculty. According to The David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Packard Fellows are inquisitive, passionate scientists and engineers who take a creative approach to their research, dare to think big, and follow new ideas wherever they lead. The foundation emphasizes support for innovative PI-led research rather than extensions or components of large-scale, ongoing research programs. Up to 20 recipients will receive individual grants of $875,000 over five years.
Workshops for Interested Applicants: Packard Fellowship proposals are only two pages and must be able to communicate big ideas to a broader audience of scientists than is typical. For these reasons, they are difficult to write. These workshops will help you hone your idea and present it in accessible, compelling language. Previous attendees have found that the exercise of preparing a Packard Fellowship proposal improved their ability to conceptualize and communicate research in other settings. Letters of recommendation are required, and the best letter writers can evaluate the future potential of the applicant, rather than just review past successes. The internal process will take these concerns into account; the workshop can help you determine your best referees as well as how to best frame your research to appeal to the Packard Foundation. Prof. Arthur Lander, past Packard Fellow; and Prof. Chang Liu, Beckman Young Investigator and Moore Inventor Fellow, will lead the workshops.
