UNC School of Medicine Ranks 6th in NIH Funding for Public Universities
All six basic science departments rank in the top 10 in National Institutes of Health funding for federal fiscal year 2023, including the Department of Genetics, which is ranked 1st among public schools. Eleven clinical departments rank in the top 30.

UNC Lineberger Named a National Research Hub for NIH Cancer Screening Study
UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center has been selected as one of nine national research sites for the National Cancer Institute’s newly launched Cancer Screening Research Network, which will evaluate promising and emerging cancer screening technologies. Daniel Reuland, MD, MPH, Louise Henderson, PhD, MSPH, and Carrie Lee, MD, MPH, will lead the UNC Lineberger Accrual, Enrollment, and Screening Site Hub.

New Drug Approvals Reshape Eosinophilic Esophagitis Treatment
Evan Dellon, MD, MPH, has been at the forefront of groundbreaking developments for the treatment of Eosinophilic Esophagitis, an allergic inflammatory disorder that affects the esophagus. His efforts, published in the journal Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, helped lead to the recent FDA approval of budesonide, the sole oral therapy designed for individuals aged 11 and older with EoE.

Eugene Bozymski, MD, an emeritus professor of medicine and a luminary in the field of gastroenterology, recently passed away. Bozymski’s passing leaves an indelible mark on UNC-Chapel Hill and UNC Hospitals, where he served as head of endoscopy for many years.

UNC Psychiatry Announces New Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship
The UNC Department of Psychiatry has launched a geriatric psychiatry fellowship, which is a one-year, PGY-5, ACGME-approved training program. The program is accepting one fellow per academic year, and applicants who have completed their four-year general psychiatry residency program and are interested in additional training in the care of older adults are welcome to apply. Amy Abramowitz, MD, is the fellowship director.

Emergency Medicine Faculty, Residents Visit NC State
The UNC Department of Emergency Medicine has participated in visits to NC State for two years in support of the NCSU Minority Association of Pre-health Students. This year, the team taught a simulated suture clinic and discussed medical careers with students interested in medical and health jobs.

Five-Year Review of Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Chair
An ad hoc committee has been appointed to undertake a routine review of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and the leadership of its chair, Russell Broaddus, MD, PhD. The review is a standard procedure of UNC-Chapel Hill and will take place on March 22. If you would like to submit feedback, the deadline is March 1.
