Japan Today: KFC releases first-ever spicy miso chicken in Japan
KFC Japan has added the new Spicy Miso Garlic Chicken to its menus for a limited time. The chicken was developed in response to customers’ desire for rich and hearty flavors during the colder months and was inspired by the Korean hotpot dish called ​​jjigae.
 
Brand Eating: KFC launches new Festive Chicken Sandwich 'overflowing with stuffing' in Canada 
KFC Canada has introduced the KFC Festive Chicken Sandwich, which will be part of KFC Canada's Festive Menu. The sandwich features stuffing in addition to cranberry sauce and a crispy-fried, buttermilk-marinated chicken breast filet. The Festive Menu also includes stuffing as a side, a number of Festive Favorites Feast for groups and "winter wonderland"-themed versions of KFC's signature buckets.
 
Brand Eating: Taco Bell brings back $5 Cravings Box for fall 2023 
The $5 Cravings Box has returned to Taco Bell U.S. menus for a limited time. The box includes a Chalupa Supreme, Beefy 5-Layer Burrito, Crunchy Taco, Cinnamon Twists and a medium fountain beverage.

The Wall Street Journal: How Starbucks lost the top spot in China’s coffee race
The Wall Street Journal reported that Luckin Coffee has surpassed Starbucks as China’s biggest coffee chain by sales and units. Luckin has around 13,300 stores in China, roughly double Starbucks’s locations. Luckin has centered its strategy around its mobile app and integrated delivery services and has touted its value for consumers and some hit flavors. China is now Starbucks’s second-largest market by stores and revenue after the U.S. and the company said that its sales in China are growing.
QSR Magazine: Carrols is on the front lines of Burger King’s comeback
QSR Magazine looked into how the success of Burger King’s largest franchisee, Carrols Restaurant Group, can be seen as a good indicator of Burger King's turnaround. Carrols in August reported one of the best quarters in the company’s 63-year history, Carrols' CEO Deborah Derby said. Derby spoke to QSR Magazine about the new prototype store called "Sizzle," the rollout of kiosks and other developments that have contributed to growth.
People: Buy Wendy's $3 key chain, get a free Frosty every day in 2024
Wendy's is once again selling a Frosty Key Tag for $3, which will let customers receive a free daily Jr. Frosty through the end of 2024. Some of the proceeds from each sale will support the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, a charity finding permanent homes for children in foster care.
Brand Eating: McDonald's Holiday Pie returns for 2023 to select markets
McDonald's has added its Holiday Pie to select markets. The limited-time dessert features a baked, flaky, buttery crust that's glazed with sugar, topped with rainbow sprinkle and filled with smooth custard.

Restaurant Business: Fast-food chain customers are getting sticker shock
Speaking at the Restaurant Finance and Development Conference, consumer strategist Lisa Miller said 52% of fast-food customers are getting “sticker shock” when they visit a restaurant. Miller said that customers will pay for restaurants that give them what they want. “People are willing to pay,” she said. “It just has to be worth it.”
QSR Magazine: Dutch Bros’ ambitious five-year growth plan pays off
Last month, Dutch Bros reached 800 locations across the United States, a number of stores that the company stated as its goal in 2018. The chain has said it wants 4,000 locations in the next 10 to 15 years. “When we look at what we’re doing from a development strategy, it really is just taking a little bit more time, in many cases, maybe just a matter of months as we go into a new market,” said CEO Christine Barone describing Dutch Bros’ updated approach. “And that’s really just to allow that brand awareness to build a little bit.”
Nation's Restaurant News: Restaurant brands jockey for Thanksgiving business
According to Technomic data, nearly one-fourth of consumers will likely purchase a full Thanksgiving meal for pickup from a restaurant and 22% plan to use restaurant food for at least part of their Thanksgiving meal. Many said they will likely choose casual dining options to feed their guests but quick-service and fast-casual brands will also benefit through holiday promotions.
Nation's Restaurant News: Chevy’s Fresh Mex parent company Xperience Restaurant Group opens latest concept Cal Mex Cantina
Xperience Restaurant Group, the parent company of Chevy’s, has opened up Cal Mex Cantina, a gastropub offering a fusion of Mexican and Californian cuisine in Redondo Beach, California. Some of the dishes on the menu include avocado hummus, a birria grilled cheese sandwich and an octopus taco. Randy Sharpe, CEO of Xperience Restaurant Group, said it would be a “tremendous opportunity” to open more locations throughout Southern California. 
Restaurant Business: Tijuana Flats founder launches what he hopes will be the Raising Cane's of Tex-Mex
Brian Wheeler, the founder of Tijuana Flats, has launched a new concept called Big Taco, which opened in Casselberry, Fla. It has a simplified menu and a “service-first” model. “There was a sign outside that Raising Cane’s location for their 25th anniversary that said, ‘25 years of not changing things that aren’t broken,’” said Jake Wheeler, Brian's son. “I think that’s a good model to go by.”

Restaurant Business: Restaurant franchisors get more time to block the new 'joint employer' definition
The National Labor Relations Board said it was delaying the adoption of the new joint-employer definition until Feb. 26, 2024, because of pending legal challenges. A group of trade associations filed a lawsuit in a Texas federal court earlier this month to block adoption of the new standard. The suit alleges that the NLRB exceeded its statutory authority by drafting such a broad standard.
Restaurant Business: Arizona restaurateur looks for inflation relief in court
An Arizona restaurant operator is suing the Arizona Department of Agriculture over state legislation that limits what type of eggs can be sold in the state. The law restricts the sale of eggs from hens living in cages smaller than one square foot. The action alleges that the restrictions will cost Arizona businesses and consumers $66 million annually.

Restaurant Dive: Presto lays of 17% of global workforce
Presto Automation has laid off around two dozen employees, which is about 17% of its workforce. The company, which offers automation and artificial intelligence technology to restaurants, said the cuts will lead to a decrease of monthly expenses of $400,000, rising to roughly $1.2 million after about eight months.

The Wall Street Journal: The pay raise people say they need to be happy
According to a new study by financial-services company Empower, Americans said that to be happy, they would need almost a 50% raise. Respondents to the survey, who had a median salary of $65,000 a year, said a median of $95,000 would make them happy and less stressed. The highest earners, with a median income of $250,000, gave a median response of $350,000.
