NSF CAREER Institute: Participant & Mentor Applications now being accepted!
Research development professionals at UCI will be running an NSF CAREER Institute for assistant professors to hone their skills in the art of competitive grant writing and proposal development. The NSF CAREER Institute will convene from January until the proposal submission deadline on July 24, 2024.

Announcing a Simplified Review Framework for NIH Research Project Grant Applications
NIH is pleased to announce that a simplified review framework will be implemented for grant receipt deadlines of Jan. 25, 2025, and beyond. The simplified framework is expected to better focus peer reviewers on the key questions needed to assess the scientific and technical merit of proposed research projects: “Can and should the proposed research project be conducted?” Read the post.
Good News!

We have been collecting information about new awards sent in by the School of Medicine research community and have created this space to share the news.
  • Lisi Flores Aguilar, PhD (Pathology), was awarded the Jerome Lejeune Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Jerome Lejeune Foundation. This fellowship supports the career development of promising young scientists working on fundamental, translational and clinical aspects of Down syndrome.

  • Anastasia Gromova, PhD (Pathology), was awarded the Waite-Griffen Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Kennedy’s Disease Association. This fellowship provides seed-money to post-doc and other young researchers who do not currently have the funding or credentials to receive funding from larger organizations such as the National Institutes of Health or the MDA. This “seed-money” provides the researcher an opportunity to further their research while providing time to apply for other grants.
Have you or someone on your research team received a new grant, i.e., research funding? The School of Medicine Office of Research would like to know. Please fill out this short New Funding/Grant Survey form.

NSF Partnerships for Innovation (PFI) Program - Research Partnerships track
The Partnerships for Innovation (PFI) Program within the Division of Industrial Innovation and Partnerships (IIP) offers researchers from all disciplines of science and engineering funded by NSF the opportunity to perform translational research and technology development, catalyze partnerships and accelerate the transition of discoveries from the laboratory to the marketplace for societal benefit.

The Technology Translation (PFI-TT) track offers the opportunity to translate prior NSF-funded research results in any field of science or engineering into technological innovations with promising commercial potential and societal impact.

The Research Partnerships (PFI-RP) track seeks to achieve the same goals as the PFI-TT track by supporting instead complex, multi-faceted technology development projects that are typically beyond the scope of a single researcher or institution and require a multi-organizational, interdisciplinary, synergistic collaboration.

While there is no institutional limit on the PFI-TT track, UCI may submit only one application in response to the PFI-RP track. Therefore PIs interested in applying to PFI-RP are asked to submit a preliminary application to the Office of Research via the UCI Review application portal.

Deadline: Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2023

Research Resources

What kind of grant support does the Research Development Unit (RDU) provide?

Are you considering applying for Limited Funding Opportunities?
In most cases, interested applicants submit a pre-proposal to the Office of Research where a committee reviews all submissions and makes a recommendation to the Vice Chancellor for Research about which proposal should go forward from UCI. Limited opportunities are advertised on fundopp.uci.edu with a link to apply. However, if you do not see a limited opportunity listed, please contact the Research Development Unit. We can relay your application plans to the UCI Office of Research so they are aware of the number of interested PIs/units on campus and, if necessary, coordinate PIs or create a review process.

Intramural & Foundation Funding Opportunities Lists
The Research Development Unit (RDU) has created lists of intramural funding opportunities and foundation funding opportunities. If you have additional opportunities that should be included, please do not hesitate to email at somrd@hs.uci.edu.
