"Picture a Scientist" Film Recommendation
A film recommendation by Bill Reach, Associate Director for Science Operations at SOFIA and Member of the USRA Committee on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

A powerful, moving film that documents the ongoing harassment and discrimination faced by women in science, Picture a Scientist premiered in April 2021. It is an eye-opener for those of us who think that women in science, from students to professors, are no longer blatantly harassed or discriminated against. The documentary details three scientists’ stories, including first-hand testimony and follow-up interviews. I was saddened and horrified by what I saw. The regret expressed by one male bystander who witnessed harassment on an Antarctic expedition but failed to act or report it will be shared by all of us, if we don’t recognize what is happening and prepare to become allies.

USRA Career Story
Developing Science Talent with USRA’s Education Organization: About Doreen, Amanda and Missy
Every year, roughly 20 percent of USRA’s revenue is devoted to education and STEM workforce development. During the summer months especially, several experiential learning and internship programs are hosted or managed by USRA with the support of USRA’s education organization. In this “USRA Career Story” we talk to Doreen, Amanda and Missy. At 10 months, six years, and 24 years of experience with USRA, respectively, these women bring unique perspectives as well as a shared fondness for their work that carries on USRA’s 44-year-long commitment to developing science talent.

How is USRA a Nonprofit?
The short answer: As a nonprofit, USRA exists for the public good. USRA’s income is used to fulfill its nonprofit public purpose, which reads, in part, as “…the development and application of space-related science, technology and engineering.” In contrast, a for-profit has owners, who receive a return or “profit” on their investment.
