Seiler receives CIRM funding for stem cell-based retina therapy
UCI stem cell researcher Magdalene J. Seiler, PhD, has received a $4.8 million grant from the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) to continue developing a stem cell-based therapy for a vision-robbing eye disease, retinitis pigmentosa. The therapy may also be applicable to macular degeneration.

Sandmeyer Appointed to CIRM Board
Suzanne Sandmeyer, PhD, professor and Grace Beekhuis Bell chair of biological chemistry, professor of microbiology and molecular genetics and vice dean for research at the UCI School of Medicine, and professor of chemical engineering and materials science at The Henry Samueli School of Engineering, has been appointed to the governing board of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM), the state’s Stem Cell Agency.

A UCI research team, led by postdoctoral fellow Rían Manville, PhD, and principal investigator Geoffrey Abbott, MSc, PhD, have discovered the first example of a novel mode of neurotransmitter-based communication. Their findings were published in Nature Communications

Said publishes new book
Serving as editor-in-chief of the recently published two-volume book titled, “Physiology of the Gastrointestinal Tract,” is Hamid Said, PhD, PharmD, a professor of physiology and biophysics and professor of medicine at the UCI School of Medicine. 

“Congratulations to Dr. Said. We are very proud to count him as one of our senior research career scientists and a shining example of the extraordinary research scientists that comprise the VA research enterprise,” said Kimberlee Potter, PhD, scientific program manager for the Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington, DC.

Alan D. Widgerow: 2018 Mentor of the Year
Alan D. Widgerow, MBBCh (MD), MMed (MHS), FCS, FACS, was announced as the 2018 Mentor of the Year by the Institute for Clinical and Translational Science. Dr. Widgerow was recognized for his outstanding commitment to mentoring, advising, and support of clinical and translational science research.

Two graduates receive 2018 Meyskens Clinical Research Awards
Candace Borders and Omid Moshtaghi, two UCI medical students from the Class of 2018, are the recipients of the 2018 Meyskens Clinical Research Award.

Named in honor of Frank L. Meyskens, Jr., MD, FACP, a professor of medicine, biological chemistry, and public health, and founding director and senior advisor for the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Meyskens Clinical Research Award is given each year to one or more graduating seniors obtaining their MD degree.  Winners are selected based on their high potential for a career in clinical research with an emphasis on translational-oriented research. The Meyskens award has been in existence for more than 20 years recognizing students doing research in a wide spectrum of disciplines.
 
Nathan Wong elected president of Pacific Lipid Association
Nathan D. Wong, PhD, FACC, FAHA, FNLA, professor of Medicine and Epidemiology and director of the UCI Heart Disease Prevention Program at the School of Medicine, was elected to serve as president of the Pacific Lipid Association (PLA) during the National Lipid Association (NLA) Annual Scientific Sessions held in Las Vegas earlier this year.
