Luxury Spa Finder |
|
Luxury Spa Finder’s special January-February 2008 issue titled “Renew Yourself” dedicates an exclusive article to the tradition Tahitian tattoo.
Though only recognized by western civilization for a few centuries, the custom of tatau or as we have come to know of it tattoo, originated in the Marquesas Islands and has been performed for over two thousand years throughout Polynesia.
Traditionally a mark of prestige or status, the practice of tattoo very nearly disappeared with the arrival of western missionaries in the late 18th century who banned it because the Old Testament forbade it. Despite some taboos surrounding tattooing, the art continues to be popular all over the world, and especially throughout the islands of Tahiti.
In this article, the author not only highlights his stay at the Bora Bora Pearl Resort & Spa, but embellishes on the particularity of the spa and how it ties back to Polynesian tradition. In addition to offering the traditional therapies, the spa also features a tattoo service” on its “spa menu” (performed by the tattoo artist Hereneui Teritehau).
