Summary: Eager to escape her frenzied, cell phone-driven life in New York, writer Alexandra Marshall seeks ultimate relaxation in the islands of Tahiti. In her feature story “Learning to Exhale,” she documents her trip in 15 pages decorated with photos by Len Jenshel and Diane Cook. She visits Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora, Huahine, and Rangiroa, participating in a range of activities to get the true flavor of the islands.
Starting in Tahiti, Marshall explores the streets of Papeete, where she is pleasantly surprised by the city’s beauty. She writes, “I am utterly charmed. Everywhere are heaps, swags, waterfalls of papery fuchsia bougainvillea—spilling over the walls of chartreuse and apple-green surf shops, clustered on street partitions, framing the pastel gingerbread Victorian homes on the outskirts of the city center.” From there, she chases fish at Motu Ahi Lagoonarium in Moorea, treks to marae on a 4-wheel drive tour of Huahine, unwinds at an overwater bungalow at the Sofitel Motu in Bora Bora, and hand-feeds a school of red snapper in Rangiroa.
In addition to the feature story, Tahiti is covered in the editor’s letter, the “Word of Mouth” section, the “Places and Prices” section, and an article titled “The Whole-Year, Whole-World Island Finder.”
